Grandma’s butter beans (Kuru Fasulye) recipe

Dry beans (Kuru fasulye) are among the most favorite dishes in Turkish cuisine. It’s a simple yet extremely delicious meal made from dried beans and tomato paste.


  • 500 gr beans
  • 1 teacup of olive oil
  • 250 grams of diced beef
  • (you can substitute beef with capsicum for vegetarian option)
  • 2 onions – shredded
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste


Soak the dried beans with warm water overnight.

Wash the beans a few times to ensure they cause no gas later. After this process, put the beans into a pot and boil them for an hour.

Once the beans are softened after boiling process, pour the olive oil into another pot and fry the meat in it. Later add the onion into this pot and stir fry with the onions for about 5 minutes.

Later add tomato paste, salt and the softened beans into this pot.

Add some hot water and leave it to boil.

Once it is boiling, turn down the fire to minimum and simmer for 15 minutes.

Give it some time to cool down and have the flavour settle in.
